The 70-Year Dream: A Safe Community Residence for the Elderly
Howell House was named for one of its benefactors, Christine Howell. In the late 1930s, she and a group of women had a vision to establish a safe community residence for elderly parishioners of Saint Mary Of the Assumption Church in Augusta, Maine. Howell House, located on Sewall Street in Augusta's west side neighborhood, opened in July 2002.
Today, the residents of Howell House, all seniors aged 55 and older, maintain a high degree of independence, living in their own apartments and enjoying the comfort of their own furnishings and belongings. Single males, females, and couples are welcome. Howell House employs a manager and housekeepers. Staff members and community volunteers work together to offer residents opportunities to participate in activities at Howell House and in the Central Maine community. |
